Acne Treatment

Acne is a condition of teenagers and some adults consisting of blocked pores (blackheads and whiteheads), pimples, and deeper lumps (cysts or nodules) that typically appear on the face, neck, chest, back, shoulders and upper arms. Seventy million Americans have acne, making it the most common skin disease in the country. Acne is not life-threatening, but can cause permanent scarring and emotional stress.

Treatment for acne varies depending on the type and severity of lesions as well as the patient's skin type, age and lifestyle. Options include:

  • Topical Medications
  • Antibiotics
  • Accutane ®
  • Blackhead Extraction
  • Photodynamic Therapy
  • Skin Care
  • Laser Treatments

Acne scarring can be treated in a variety of ways. The following treatments produce successful results:

Chemical Peels

Chemical peels remove damaged outer layers of skin on the face to smooth texture, reduce scarring, and remove blemishes and pre-cancerous growths to produce healthy, glowing skin. Peel formulas and strengths are tailored to each patient. Peels can be combined with other procedures for a younger look. They may be covered by insurance if they are performed for medical rather than cosmetic reasons.

Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) Photofacial

Photofacial produces rejuvenation of your skin using the remarkable technology of Intense Pulsed Light (IPL). IPL Photofacials can improve the signs of sun damage, rosacea and brown spots on the face, hands and body. It has also been used to reduce the appearance of mild acne scars, dark circles around the eyes and fine lines around the eyes and mouth.

The IPL Photofacial handpiece is gently pressed to the skin and painless pulses of light are emitted. Usually 4-6 treatment sessions lasting about 20-30 minutes each will provide you with beautiful results.

There is no recuperation time – with an IPL Photofacial you can return to work or resume your normal activities on the same day. You will notice a gradual, natural-looking improvement in your skin with time. IPL is a safe solution tailor-made to your skin type and condition.

Sclerotherapy

Sclerotherapy is a procedure in which saline, a salt solution, or Asclera®, a sclerosing agent, is injected into small veins and capillaries and works by irritating the lining of the veins causing them to shrink and disappear. This procedure has been safely done since the 1930’s and is recommended even by laser experts as the first line of therapy.

This procedure is usually performed in your doctor's office and takes no more than an hour. Most patients need 2 to 4 treatments in order to achieve desired results. There is no downtime other than avoiding strenuous activities for the first 2 to 3 days.

While sclerotherapy is proven as an effective treatment for spider veins, it is not recommended for everybody. Pregnant women are not typically eligible for this procedure. Sclerotherapy is not effective for large varicose veins and is only recommended for smaller, superficial veins. Talk to your doctor to find out if sclerotherapy is right for you.

Skin Allergies

Skin allergies are often caused by coming in contact with certain plants and chemicals. While poison oak is very common, there are many plants, fragrances and substances in our environment that can cause an itchy, red skin rash. There are three major groups of skin diseases caused by allergy: eczema, allergic contact dermatitis and hives. Eczema occurs most commonly in children and involves red, thickened, swollen patches of skin on the cheeks, scalp, neck and trunk that itch and can be painful. Allergic contact dermatitis describes the onset of a rash, swelling, blistering or other effect after the skin touches an irritating substance such as clothing materials and dyes, latex, cosmetics, soaps, perfumes or certain plants like poison ivy. In some situations exposure to sunlight while taking certain medications or where certain chemicals are intentionally or accidentally applied to the skin can cause a rash limited to areas that are exposed to the sun. Certain blood pressure medications and applying citrus oils to the skin are known to do this. Hives, also called urticaria, are itchy rashes with bumps resembling insect bites. They can occur in small patches or all over the body, and last anywhere from a few minutes to several months.
